Remove Line Breaks

Text copied from a PDF or an email often arrives chopped into short lines. This joins it back into proper sentences.

Which button should I use?

  • Remove line breaks, keep paragraphs joins lines inside each paragraph but keeps the blank lines between paragraphs. This is the one for PDFs, emails and articles.
  • Remove all line breaks puts everything on a single line with a space where each break was.

Want commas instead of spaces between the joined lines, like red, green, blue? Use Make a comma separated list.

Why does copied text have line breaks?

PDFs store text line by line as it appears on the page, and many email programs wrap plain text at about 72 characters. When you copy, those visual line ends come along as real line breaks. Most word processors can’t tell them apart from intentional ones; this tool uses the blank lines between paragraphs to tell the difference.

Questions

My paragraphs got merged too. Why?

Paragraphs need a blank line between them to be kept apart. If your text has no blank lines, add them between paragraphs first, or use Find and replace.

Will it remove hyphens at the end of lines?

Not automatically. Use Find and replace to replace “-\n” (a hyphen and a new line) with nothing before removing line breaks.
