How to remove one list from another

  1. Paste your main list in Your list.
  2. Paste what you want taken out in Remove these.
  3. Choose what to match (see below) and press Remove these from my list.

Only your list changes. It keeps its order, its separators and its own repeats, so it still lines up with the spreadsheet or file it came from. Changed your mind? Undo brings it back. Keep only these does the opposite: it keeps only the items that are in the second box.

What to match

  • Whole items: an item is removed when it’s exactly the same as one in the second box, apart from spaces at the ends and (unless you untick it) capital letters.
  • The email address in each line: Amy Chen <amy@acme.com> or amy@acme.com, Sales is removed when amy@acme.com is in the second box, whatever else is on the line. Lines without an email address are kept.
  • The website or email domain: put acme.com in the second box to remove bob@acme.com, dev@sales.acme.com and https://www.acme.com/about in one go.

Common uses

  • Taking unsubscribes and bounced addresses off a mailing list (a “suppression list”)
  • Removing people who already replied, paid or signed up
  • Crossing finished items off a to-do or task list
  • Removing products you’ve already listed, or IDs that were already processed
  • Leaving out your own company or your competitors’ domains

Want to see both sides instead, including what the two lists have in common? Use Compare two lists. Your lists never leave your computer: everything happens in your browser.

Questions

Do both lists need the same format?

No. Each box’s format is detected on its own, so you can remove a comma separated list from a column copied out of a spreadsheet. Names with spaces, like “Amy Chen”, stay whole in the second box.

What if an item is in my list twice?

Both copies are removed. To remove repeats within your list, use Remove duplicates.

Is there a size limit?

Only your browser’s memory. Tens of thousands of items take well under a second, and nothing is uploaded.
